Official Description

" As with all members of the animal kingdom, dragons, too, must follow a hierarchy of power and leadership.
At the apex of that chain of command rules an exceedingly rare blastoff dragon to which all others bow — the Bewilderbeast. Nevertheless, Bewilderbeasts are non built-in to that alpha status; information technology is earned through gainsay, vigilance, and most importantly, a want to protect the dragons and all other creatures in its nest. Fortunately for Bewilderbeasts, there are few other dragons in the earth that tin match their intimidating stature and always hope to compete for the designation of "king of all dragons".
Bewilderbeasts are too quite impressive architects, fashioning near-impenetrable nests out of their cocky-generated ice and using natural hot springs to provide warmth and sustenance to the flock under its care. From its oasis within this icy cocoon, the Bewilderbeast rules all dragons without bias, without malice, and without question.
"
— Dragonpedia entry for Valka's Bewilderbeast
" In improver to its icy jiff and alpha's power to bend other dragons to its will, the Bewilderbeast is likewise a formidable strength underwater. Equally a Class 10 Leviathan (the aquatic equivalent of a Titan Fly), a full-grown Bewilderbeast swims at incredible speeds and bursts to the surface to surprising, and devastating, effect. "
— Dragonpedia entry for Drago's Bewilderbeast

Development

As mentioned in The Fine art of How to Railroad train Your Dragon two, initially, the producers wanted merely but Valka to have a Bewilderbeast, only later some idea, decided that Drago should take one too. To distinguish both dragons, also as emphasize the dissimilarity between both dragons' personalities and background, their design and temperament had to exist very different.

Valka's Bewilderbeast gains inspiration from a polar deport, says Pierre-Olivier Vincent, the product designer. Whereas Drago'due south was inspired past abused zoo and circus animals. Simon Otto, however, says that the Bewilderbeast is a cross between a mammoth, otter, and regal lion[1].

Early hand-drawn Bewilderbeast sketches mainly depict them as colossal dragons, yet preserving its 'flat lip proportions' and protrusions on its neck. However, in earlier designs, like in Bewilderbeast Studies past Nico Marlet, the Bewilderbeast had chunkier spikes on its chin. Its lower jaw and chin were somewhat elongated, its eyes were smaller and the frill was smaller. This gave the dragon a somewhat sterner and wiser appearance.

The team also spent a lot of time on the Bewilderbeasts' horns. Various concept art explores different dimensions of the Bewilderbeasts' jaws, frills, and horns.

" The Bewilderbeast was a huge undertaking due to its colossal size and how close the photographic camera gets to him. Our main challenge was to create textures that worked in ultra close-up to reveal his coral-like amphibian skin and in broad shots to underscore his imposing scale. [src] "
— Paolo deGuzman, head of surfacing

Due to the close-ups on the Bewilderbeast, it was especially hard for animators to animate the peel realistically. The skin was designed to resemble a somewhat rocky, coral-like texture. Though both dragons had a like texture, Valka's was intended to be 'cleaner' and 'purer' in terms of color. Drago's was bumpier and darker, with blunter horns.

Concrete Advent

Egg.jpeg

Egg

The egg of the Bewilderbeast is oval, snow white, and covered in small blood-red-brown spikes that resemble those on an adult Bewilderbeast's face and back. It is unknown whether the colors of the spikes bear on the colors of the hatchling. It is usually laid in a nest of ice made past the parents.

Hatchling to Titan Wing

Bewilderbeasts are incredibly massive, spiky dragons with a pair of gigantic, tusk-like horns protruding from the sides of their heads and huge multiple wings. The front end side of their bodies is covered with burr-like spikes, along with two lines of spikes forth the eyelids, giving an impression of eyebrows. Protrusions from the back of their heads form mane-like frills. Different Cherry Deaths, Bewilderbeasts are unable to fly for not having big enough wings for flight, generally due to their jumbo trunk sizes, and they probable use their wings to assist them in pond, like to penguins. This makes one of the few weaknesses that brand this species vulnerable.

Proportions of upper and lower jaws are unlike those of usual reptiles, having a fish-like mouth with many small teeth. Their lips are like to those of mammals like humans to enable them 'blow' actions. Interestingly, no nostrils are visible on their faces. Their hard, "coral-like amphibian skin" covers their whole bodies and the scales provide surprisingly robust defenses to the dragons. In full, this species has many unique characteristics, making it a very mammal-like dragon. They come in colors such as ice white, dirty gray, and dark purple.

Beingness Class 10 Leviathans, Bewilderbeasts are the largest and highest-ranked Tidal Class dragons. Though information technology is unknown how a Form 1 Leviathan differs from a Class ten.

Abilities

Water ice Spikes

Come across Fire Types.

A Bewilderbeast's about notable and feared power is to burst streams of water ice-turning water on contact. Information technology does this by sucking up and ingesting masses of water from

Closeup of the destructive Ice Blast.gif

the sea and storing it in the goiters down its neck. The Bewilderbeast's jiff is and then intensely cold and information technology regurgitates the water with so bully a force, that when information technology hits its target, it breaks apart and freezes mid-splash. Ice expelled by the Bewilderbeast has a very unlike texture, quality, and color than other ice. Its ice has a greenish tint and freezes in very iconic, absorbing ice spikes. This ice-nail is extremely powerful, and can create immense 'glacial explosions' on contact that can destroy and penetrate whatsoever artificial structures with ease.

Bewilderbeasts tin either contain freezing air in their bodies or can create common cold mists themselves, and adjust this

Valka's Bewilderbeast Unlished.gif

ability to shoot destructive projectiles. This ability to shoot ice is similar to the Groncicle, Shivertooth, and Woolly Howl. Yet, unlike the other dragons, the Bewilderbeast shoots large amounts of freezing water that eventually plow into ice on bear on.

Seemingly, they tin can create glaciers and ice masses that are far larger than their bodies or produce pocket-size, gentle puffs of mist or snow. The fact that Bewilderbeasts prefer the hot springs about the volcanoes indicates that they exercise non take cold water into their bodies to apply ice blasts. The Bewilderbeast's breath appears to be

The mist breath.gif

common cold, which may be how they eject the seawater and are then able to reduce its temperature to below freezing right as it crashes into its target due to the water undergoing rapid decompression, thus losing vast quantities of heat.

In the concluding season of Dragons: Race to the Edge, the Berserker Bewilderbeast is shown charging up its attack and with a teal light present in its mouth.

Strength and Combat

Drago's Bewilderbeast crushes under its foot a trap.gif

Being one of the largest dragons known to Vikings, Bewilderbeasts possess unmatched strength and raw power. They tin can trounce massive war contraptions without even noticing information technology and turn through mountainsides as if they were paper walls.

Bewilderbeasts are docile and ordinarily avoid encounters and battles, despite their massive sizes. When moved to fight, be it to defend their nests or brawl for potency, Bewilderbeasts use several tactics for boxing.

When battling smaller dragons or humans, Bewilderbeasts adopt to attack from the depths of the seas, emerging with a roar and decimating their foes with their Water ice Breath, stomping on whatever remains.

The battle between 2 Bewilderbeasts.gif

When brawling against a large Blastoff Species dragon such every bit a Scarlet Expiry or Foreverwing, they prefer to employ their massive bodies to throw themselves against opponents, while using their heads, horns, and tail for ramming, bashing and swiping, finishing off their opponents with their mighty ice breath. When they come across another member of their species, even so, they tend to honorably duel utilizing only their heads and horns to lock and button, until either duelist either backs off and leaves or is defeated and consequently killed, leaving the winner victorious and ruler of the territory and nest.

Speed and Agility

On land, Bewilderbeasts are boring walkers and possess virtually no agility, crashing near every obstacle in the way, more often than not due to their gargantuan sizes and extreme weight.

In the ocean, however, information technology is a different story entirely. Bewilderbeasts are fast and active swimmers, easily capable of outswimming and outmaneuvering the fastest of ships and most sea dragons, swimming hundreds of miles in mere hours.

Endurance and Stamina

The Bewilderbeast is resistant.gif

Beingness dragons of unheard-of sizes, a Bewilderbeast's scales are of the toughest effectually. They can take hundreds of dragon blasts of all kinds and temperatures, fifty-fifty the mighty Night Fury'southward plasma smash, and remain unscathed. They practise withal showroom weaker underbelly scales, if whatever, and tin can suffer impairment from other Bewilderbeasts.

They can fight and boxing for long periods of time while showing no sign of strain or fatigue and tin swim for miles and miles at a time without balance.

Underwater Adaptations

The Bewilderbeast emerges from the water.gif

Being aquatic, these dragons can submerge and stay underwater for a long time despite being a species of pulmonary respiration. Also, despite their enormous sizes and a rather terrestrial form, they are truthful to their class; capable of pond at a surprisingly fast speed which is faster than the finest ships. The pond speed of fully matured Bewilderbeasts is beyond belief; they are capable of ignoring drastic hydraulic drags and water pressures due to their jumbo torso masses, existence active plenty to effortlessly chase oceanic fish to feed other dragons, and are fast enough to demonstrate surprise attacks despite being then big. Also, the pond itself produces devastating side furnishings at elevation speeds. It is likely they use their wings to help in pond.

Senses

Bewilderbeasts have very refined senses, especially their hearing, as Drago'southward Bewilderbeast was capable of hearing Drago telephone call for him while being completely submerged underwater.

Dragon Controlling

" He who controls the Alpha, controls them all. [src] "
— Drago Bludvist
The force of an Alpha.gif

According to Dragons: Rise of Berk, Bewilderbeasts use their optics and ultrasonic sounds to command dragons' minds. This was shown in the 2d moving picture, the Bewilderbeast's bony spines on its caput were apace vibrating while the pupils on its eyes narrowed into slits, seemingly confirming that they do indeed circulate ultrasound sounds.

The Bewilderbeast calls all the Dragons.gif

It was in one case unclear whether this ability is separated from or is just one of its behaviors, just it was later on revealed that besides possessing hypnosis like abilities (based in sound waves), each Bewilderbeast devotes sufficient efforts to proceeds trust and respect from nestmates, and successes must be accompanied by moralities and the kings' wills to bring happiness and fortunes to other dragons. Once controlling is actuated, all other smaller dragons in the vicinity are under the Alpha'south command, unable to resist without countermeasures.

Weaknesses

The previous Alpha defeated and killed.gif

Big Size

Being massive dragons, Bewilderbeasts lack speed and agility while on land, mostly unable to avoid large obstacles in their way. Although uncertain at Tiny Tooth and Curt Wing stages, Bewilderbeasts are unable to fly, and their wings are used mainly for swimming and vestigial purposes.

Weak Spot

Bewilderbeasts announced to have a weak spot or thinner if whatsoever, scales in their underbellies, and a blow powerful enough such equally the horns of another individual, in this weak spot is enough to kill a Bewilderbeast.

Drago's Bewilderbeast is distracted by the Riders.gif

Alpha Control Limits

The one weakness of its Alpha Control is being that it merely applies to mature dragons. Baby dragons, who "listen to no i" due to their underdeveloped senses, are shown to be fully immune. This force is besides said to be weakened when a dragon is distracted by other noises like a human speaking to it. As well, if a dragon can exercise enough volition over the Bewilderbeast'southward control, it tin break free from its control. Only Toothless has been able to do this with Hiccup'due south assist. A simple blindfold appears to be enough to eliminate a Bewilderbeast'due south naturally hypnotic glare.

Behavior and Personality

The Dragons shows their gratitude to the Alpha.gif

Equally Valka said in How to Train Your Dragon 2, each nest has its queens but the Bewilderbeast is the male monarch of all dragons. They are the most powerful dragon species and are also the largest of all dragons known so far. Most individuals construct nests within mountains out of their ice that host and protect not only themselves but many other dragons that either live in the surrounding expanse or serve the mighty dragon. Information technology was revealed in Dragons: Rise of Berk that the dragons living in the ice nests are called Primals.

Bewilderbeasts are kind and docile creatures that protect and intendance for their swain dragons and underlings, tending to their young and even herding large schools of fish to feed them. On the other manus, all the same, Bewilderbeasts tin be cruel and menacing, forcing or enslaving the other dragons even confronting their will to do the Bewilderbeast'southward bidding using their Alpha Control ability. This behavior is quite similar to that of the Cherry Death, but with a much stronger influence. They are leaders of dragons, and are substantially living 'nature' themselves to preordain unabridged ecosystems; being a gentle, 'father nature' or malevolent, 'natural disaster or storm'.

The amazing jump from the water.gif

Generally due to their large sizes, Bewilderbeasts are rare, seldom seen dragons, and prefer to alive in the cooler, arctic regions of the Barbaric Archipelago, where they either live submerged in the h2o or construct their huge ice nests. Oddly enough, Bewilderbeasts prefer to live most hot springs, bathing and living in the warmer waters, despite their otherwise cold environment.

Bewilderbeasts mark their territories with their massive ice fortresses and readily gainsay other individuals who

The battle between leaders starts.gif

challenge their territory or dominance in an honorable duel-like way, utilizing specific moves such as locking horns or head-butting, with the loser either accepting defeat and scurrying away or getting killed and disposed of.

Bewilderbeasts are an Alpha Species and 1 of the most powerful dragons effectually, and as such are oft the Blastoff Dragon, ruler of all dragons. This title and condition are only earned by defeating the previous title holder, be it through honorable dueling or straight-out killing it.

Johann meanwhile is killed by the adult Bewilderbeast when information technology freezes him solid while he attempts to kill Hiccup. It so summons every available dragon to Berserker Island to defeat Krogan'south Dragon Flyers and escapes, never to be seen once again. Hiccup himself never sees the dragon, and later gives the egg to the Wingmaidens, who get out it in a place where Valka finds it to heighten the dragon in safety, leading into the second chapter of the How to Train Your Dragon movies.

How to Train Your Dragon ii

" You may have an ice-spitting dragon on your side, but we still have a quota to fill up. "
— Eret, Son of Eret lamenting about Bewilderbeast's destruction of his fort

The first mentions of the Bewilderbeast come from Eret, as he angrily remarks to Hiccup and Astrid, accusing them of destroying their fort. It had, indeed, been blasted in ice during Valka'due south earlier mission to save captive dragons. Eret then taunts them most how Drago would capture them all, including the 'water ice-spitting dragon'.

Shortly after Valka and Hiccup'south reunion, Valka'southward Bewilderbeast is outset seen when she introduces Hiccup to her current home — a beautiful sanctuary made of ice. Valka and then explains how the Blastoff leads and protects all the dragons. Peaceful nonetheless with an air of grandeur, the massive dragon sits in a pool before rising to greet the newcomers. Toothless and Valka bow in respect, Hiccup remains awestruck equally the Bewilderbeast puffs out a deject of icy frost on him. When it was feeding time, the Bewilderbeast leads a swarm of flight dragons out while he swims underwater, rounding up fish with a trio of Seashockers. Presently, he emerges out from the water and spits out fish for all the dragons.

" The Alpha! Now, we have a fight! [src] "
— Drago on the Bewilderbeast'southward face-off

He then appears during the boxing confronting Drago, summoned by Valka. Drago remarks that he had brought a 'challenger' and summons his own Bewilderbeast, a much darker one. The two Bewilderbeasts face-off, but Valka'southward 1 lost, only to be impaled by his opponent's horns. Drago'due south Bewilderbeast lets out a mighty roar and commands all the dragons, including Toothless. Toothless, forced against his volition, kills Stoick and leads the army to Berk.

Over at that place, the Bewilderbeast wreaks havoc on the village. The gang soon arrives and Hiccup, afterward some coaxing, releases Toothless from the mind control. They reunite and with trust, a blindfold, and constant talking to distract him from the hypnosis, the duo attacks the Bewilderbeast and Drago. Drago is thrown off and Hiccup declares victory, only to have the Bewilderbeast blast both him and Toothless in ice spikes.

However, Toothless' Alpha way activates before long later on and breaks from the ice. He challenges the Alpha (to protect Hiccup) by blasting him repeatedly and throwing him off guard. The other dragons recover from their hypnosis and side against the Bewilderbeast, bombarding him with blows. The Bewilderbeast takes a deep jiff and prepares to fire, only amidst the smoke, Toothless unleashes a mighty boom that breaks off a horn. Shaken and thrown off his Alpha status, the Bewilderbeast admits defeat and swims abroad.
